One big party in one little town...

Oktoberfest is......well, there is no other way to put it. It is one huge party in one tiny town.  Why, you ask, does the Drakes Crossing Fire District have a page dedicated to the Oktoberfest? We are glad you asked. The Mt. Angel Oktoberfest is held for two primary purposes: to celebrate the German heritage of the town, and as a giant fundraiser for independent local organizations, ranging from churches, to auxiliaries, to fire districts. For over 40 years, the Drakes Crossing Fire District has brought together firefighters, family, and community members to operate a food booth serving high quality ice cream products at this immensely popular festival.

Are you interested in help us out? New to the community, or just looking to meet some of your neighbors? Volunteering to work a shift or two is a great way to meet some great people. Shifts run 4 hours long—not very long. We run shifts 10am-10/11pm Thursday-Sunday, with Sunday wrapping up at 8pm for booth clean-up and removal. Fill out the interest card below and you name will be put on a calling list for the year. Expect a phone call between  mid July and September.  The dates for 2010 are September 16-20.

About Oktoberfest:

"There is no more appropriate setting for an American version of the "Old World" Oktoberfest than in Mount Angel, Oregon. The small community was settled by German pioneers in the 1800s and readily reminds one of the rich Bavarian countryside. Oregon's oldest and best-loved Oktoberfest began in 1966 as a traditional harvest festival to celebrate the bounty of the earth and the goodness of creation. It is Oregon's largest folk festival.

In 1810 the Wittelsbach royal dynasty hosted the 5 day celebration of lavish public hospitality to commemorate the October 12th union of the Crown Prince Ludwig to Therese Charlotte Louise of Saxe – Hildburghausen. Prince Ludwig was a renowned horseman. In his honor, the finest horses from the countryside were raced outside the city gates, to delight the growing crowds assembled in the same field outside Munich they hold the Oktoberfest today. The royal house served their subjects 32,065 loaves of white bread, 3992 pounds of Swiss cheese, over 80 hundred weight of mutton, 8120 cervelat of sausage, 13,300 pairs of smoked sausage. The couple was toasted with 5000 gallons of beer and nearly 88 gallons of Austrian wine.

That Royal wedding celebration proved so immensely popular, it was developed into an annual festival which became the pride of Bavaria and spawned countless Oktoberfest style celebrations around the world."
